STMicroelectronics has begun mass production of its first cellular-phone WiFi chip. The company said its STLC4370 chip, based on 802.11g technology, provides power-efficient, high-speed wireless performance.

The compact design lets it fit into devices of different shapes and types, including the candy bar-style, compact PDAs and fold-open keyboard designs, according to InfoWorld. The chip has been included in the design of several recently launched Wi-Fi cellular handsets, according to STMicroelectronics. The chip costs US$10 in quantities of 100,000.

Meanwhile, Atheros, a leading developer of WiFi chips, today announced a collaboration with QUALCOMM to develop interoperability with Atheros' single-chip Radio-on-Chip for Mobile (ROCm) and select QUALCOMM Mobile Station Modem chipsets.

To ensure that end users have an easy way to configure their ROCm-enabled devices, Atheros offers the JumpStart for Wireless, available on an open-source basis from SourceForge.
