With all the talk of digital copyrighting and paid content these days, this story is an interesting wrinkle. The Grateful Dead, who long allowed fans to tape live concerts and distribute bootlegs, have asked the operators of Live Music Archive to make their concert recordings available only for streaming online, but not downloadable. Way back in the old Napster days, the Dead were among the bands who didn't have a problem with free p2p sharing of their mp3 files. The Dead are now selling downloads on their site, which can be copied and transferred without restriction.
