Excuse the editorializing in the headline, but this is really outrageous. A high school in Maynard, Mass., has had a small FM station for more than 30 years. Don't picture a tiny after-school club playing music for an hour - 185 students are part of WAVM-FM 91.7, which broadcasts music, community programming, high school sports and fundraisers. When they applied to the FCC to increase their 10-watt signal so they could hit more of the community, government-think kicked in. FCC rules require that when you put in an application to boost your signal - others can bid on the frequency. Backfire. The FCC awarded the station to California religious broadcaster Living Proof, Inc.. The kids are going to lose their license, and the FCC is proving its utter inability to act in the public interest. The school is appealing - but good luck fighting that kind of mentality.
