: SanDisk is expected to announce Tuesday that it be selling preloaded music and video on flash memory cards along with cards that can be filled with downloaded content, according to the WSJ. The cards, branded gruvi and with a suggested retail price of $39.99, also come with their own DRM but SanDisk says TrustedFlash isn't device driven and that users will be able to move content between devices. Initial supporters include EMI Group, Samsungs cellphone division, Yahoo Music, PacketVideo Corp., News Corp.'s NDS Group.
The price could be a deterrent but the cards can be used to store consumer content. They're also similar in price to Sony's UMD, which is much more limited in terms of use.
The Journal calls it "an ambitous vision" and I can't say I disagree.
Rafat adds: One of the things the companies are not yet talking about is a big music act which will sign on to use the service...I can't really say much, beyond the fact that it is one of the biggest rock acts in the world....you can put two and two together from here. More on this later...
