Playlisters have sometimes been accused of claiming to be the authors of any media files they link to. The idea behind this claim is that there is something unnatural about linking directly to media files unless the creator of the link is also the creator of the target.

I ran across this relevant bit of theory by Tim Berners-Lee in his personal notes on axioms of web architecture:

A normal hypertext link does NOT necessarily imply that

  • One document endorses the other; or that
  • One document is created by the same person as the other, or that
  • One document is to be considered part of another.
