Technologies for videoblogging

When I wrote my initial paper about videoblogging last summer I was looking for a number of technical solutions in order to make sharing and co-creation of video more feasible. A lot of people seem to be interested in videoblogging and a number of new services and ideas have emerged during the last six months (By the way: Those living close to New York should attend Vloggercon 2005 at 22. January).

BitTorrent has been around for quite some time, but it has become more accessible to those of us who are not into the technical stuff: Licensed under GPL Blog Torrent is a software that makes it much easier to share and download files using the BitTorrent protocol. It’s goal is to let you post video or other large files to your web site as easily as you post text. If you´re not into hosting torrents yourself you might want to try Prodigem. Prodigem is a service hosted at Torrentocracy that uses Bit Torrent filesharing. The service is currently free. See what’s available from the Prodigem Torrent Tracker.

Another interesting service is Vimeo which generates a movie for you using the Vidbits that I’ve uploaded individually. I believe the movie creator uses close to the same approach as I suggested for an editor using SMIL, kind of like the one I wanted to implement in my own videoblog. I can hardly wait to see the further development of this one, perhaps into something more like an universal playlist creator like Webjay.

And of course, I still whish for an editor which makes it possible re-edit “play-lists” created by others.
