Sanswire Stratellite

wifi_balloon.jpg image

An Atlanta spin-off from GlobeTel called Sanswire Networks will be launching a giant, solar-powered airship next month that will be able to provide wireless data and voice access to areas of earth as large as Texas. While access to the 'stratellite' (for 'airship satellite') will necessitate a special antenna to transmit to the ship 13 miles above the earth, the speeds are being reported as 'DSL alternative' at least. Even if the lag is bad, it sounds as if the bandwidth might be faster than the generally anemic satellite connections (then again, it could be bouncing to another satellite, although that seems unlikely).

Guess we'll find out next month. Too cool.

Is there discussion forum on this "stratellite" technology proposed by Sanswire (GlobTel)?
I would love to hear pro and cons. Sounds rather cool to me....especially for third world areas.
Anyone ?

Thanks

Waiting for the test launch now scheduled for early April 2005. The goal at end state is to provide "broadband" wireless service to markets 300 sq miles in size for $29/mo. If this product hits the market watch out. Also not to mention the potential military buy in from the US and abroad. There are no real cons, either they launch and demo the unit successfully in early 05 or they will need some more private placements to continue research. Recent releases indicate they are bringing in some extra know how. Maybe some challenges being discovered? Time will tell.

Facinating! Friends of mine and I cannot wait to see the outcomes of the beta tests! We have been following Globtel for a while and have high hopes for their success!

Cheers!
