Chilean Indymedia group leaves the network

The Santiago, Chile-based segment of Indymedia, santiago.indymedia.org, announced its departure from the Indymedia network on Saturday, citing differences in opinion on various topics. It seems that the Santiago group's hardline beliefs apparently don't mesh with the core Indymedia standards or values.

I received an email asking me what I thought was so significant about this post.

I remember talking with some folks a while back comparing collectives and federations in 'citizens' media. I was wondering at what point would the appeal of the organization (access to audience) start to decline in light of either an increase in energy (to maintain membership) or a split in common goals.

As individual nodes peel off, will each one continue to thrive after building up a sustainable community of users? Do tools like RSS combined with CC licensing bring the cost of membership in media networks to near zero? Is santiago.indymedia essentially asking for an opt-out?

I need to shut up... where's Clay? ;)
