Yesterday, talking with Marcus Mauller, we figured out how to integrate BitTorrent with Manila. The key is to do it through Gems. In a special Manila site on a server running the BitTorrent software, when you upload a Gem to that site, it automatically generates a meta file, and links to it in the Gems table listing. It's the perfect user interface. The content creator needs to know nothing about the difficult process of Torrent-izing a media file, the URL is handled the same way the non-Torrent URL is handled.

This mixes the primary seed, and the tracker together. So, the user has to upload the whole file in a form to the webserver, and then the webserver takes care of the rest.

That's the bandwidth for uploading, and then more bandwidth and time to upload once, and then the server has to upload to the public via the BT protocol at least 1.5 times more in order to be a good seed, or if the file is not well seeded, the server then bears the responsibility of continuing to upload.

Comparatively, if the content-creator is the primary seed, they just email or blog their .torrent file, and they remain the primary seed.

Another good idea would be to just make a GEM that registers a .torrent file that's uploaded with the BT tracker, and then link the .torrent. The user still uploads and seeds via their own machine, and bear the responsibility of maintaining the availability.

However, this is definately a good idea to simplify all of this, and to guarentee availability at the same time. You can do this with the python scripts on just about any web server (for instance, upload via php, and then use php to kick off the bittorrent scripts).
