DTV to $70 Billion by 2008

DVD players, LCD panels and plasma display screen sales are driving the adoption of digital television worldwide, according to new report from IDC. The market is poised to reach sales of $70 billion in 2008. According to the report, the shift from analog to digital TV is in full swing, but consumers' overall awareness and understanding of DTV remains low.

Let's review: All HDTV sets are digital, BUT all digital sets are NOT HD. When you watch a DVD you are not watching HD television - even if you're viewing it on a $20,000 HD Ready, flat screen TV. DVD's are plain old NTSC 525 line television. The reason it looks so good is that it is a digital signal playing almost all 525 lines (less digital noise, codec errors and compression artifacts) on a digital screen. Even a good VHS will only show you 350 to 400 lines and broadcast TV, depending on how you get it (antenna, cable, satellite, carrier pigeon) can be a low as 270 lines by the time you see it.

When you actually get to see an HD DVD, you will be blown away. I've been working with some people who are developing Blu-ray HD-DVD players and believe me, you won't be able to confuse it with a regular DVD - not even a progressive scan one.
